On 14 March 2026, the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka (NCYSL) hosted a workshop on Child Rights and Child Safety at the YMCA of Colombo Forum Hall. This training was part of NCYSL’s ongoing 2026 training schedule aimed at equipping YMCA staff and volunteers with knowledge and practical skills to safeguard children in all YMCA activities. Ms Nishamani De Silva from Save the Children was the facilitator of the event.
The workshop brought together 29 participants representing 7 YMCAs from Western, Southern and Central Regions of the country. From the YMCA of Pamunugama, 6 members, including 5 staff and a volunteer, participated actively in the training.
The sessions covered essential topics such as understanding child rights, recognizing and preventing child abuse, creating safe environments for children within YMCA programs. Participants engaged in interactive discussions and scenario-based activities, which provided practical guidance on handling real-life situations responsibly.
We are grateful to NCYSL for this valuable training opportunity. The knowledge and skills gained are highly relevant to the ongoing work of the YMCA of Pamunugama, especially in programs like the Makalause Dream School, Scouting, Pre-School and Camping where ensuring the safety and well-being of children is central to our mission.
