On June 25, 2026, 15 parents from the Makalause Dream School met at the Fish Park Restaurant in Pamunugama for a day of shared learning and community building. We spent a good portion of our time digging into what the concept of disability really means today. It was a great opportunity to raise awareness and move past common misconceptions, helping us all gain a clearer, more positive perspective on our children’s lives. By talking these things through together, we were able to break down some of the confusion and feel more confident in how we understand our children’s needs.
The conversation also got very practical. Many parents are often unsure about what support is actually out there, so we spent time going over the specific facilities and resources available through government institutions. We learned exactly how to approach these offices and how to go about securing the help our families need. Having the Makalause staff, the General Secretary of the YMCA of Pamunugama, and our Task Committee Chairman, Mr. Aruna Shantha Nonis, with us was a big help, as they were able to offer clear advice on navigating these systems.
Beyond the information, the real heart of the day was about standing together. We spoke a lot about the importance of building resilience and staying strong as a group, no matter how tough things get. It was a powerful reminder that we don't have to face these challenges alone; by staying united and persistent, we can push forward until the rights of persons with disabilities are fully recognized and respected. More than anything, the day was a chance for us to connect with one another, share our own experiences, and build a stronger support network that will help us all keep going for the long haul.
