Digital mapping of Negombo lagoon pollution sources

The Collective to protect Negombo Lagoon was formed by fishermen, organizations, and interested individuals in the Negombo Lagoon area to work as a people's movement to save the Negombo Lagoon which is becoming a dead zoon due to human activities. Janawabodha Kendra a leading Civil Society Organization in Negombo area took the initiative to build this movement and at present the YMCA of Pamunugama is also taking part in its activities.

Collective has already intervened on several occasions to prevent environmental damage around the Negombo Lagoon. In order to assist the interventions collective decided a prepare a digital map of the Negombo lagoon which indicates the places with pollution sources in and around Negombo lagoon. Four young people interested in the environment, the staff of the Janawabodha Kendra and the YMCA of Pamunugama are currently contributing to the initial phase of the work.

Accordingly, a preliminary planning discussion on the mapping program was held on 23rd October 2021 at the YMCA of Pamunugama. Then the volunteers travelled around the Negombo lagoon on November 21, 2021 in two groups to gather information such as mangrove deforestation, land invasions, buildings and docks built illegally. This information is currently being computerized with the help of the Google My Map application.

Further information will be gathered and the map will continue to be updated. Further action on the data and information obtained will be taken with the intervention of the Collective.

සිතියම්ගත කෙරෙන මීගමු කළපුවේ පාරිසරික විනාශයන්

මේ අනුව සිතියම්ගත කිරීමේ වැඩපිළිවෙල පිළිබඳව මූලික සැළසුම් කිරීමේ සාකච්ඡාවක් 2021 ඔක්තොම්බර් මස 23 වන දින පමුණුගම තරුණ ක්‍රිස්තියානි සංගමයේදී පැවැත්වින. ඉන් අනතුරුව 2021 නොවැම්බර් මස  21 වන දින කණ්ඩායම් දෙකක් වශයෙන් තොරතුරු රැස් කිරීම සඳහා කළපුව වටා සංචාරය කරන ලදි. මෙහිදී කලපුව ආශ්‍රීත කඩොලාන කැපීම්, කළපුවට සම්බන්ධ කොට ඇති කානු පද්ධති, කලපුව ආක්‍රමණය කරමින් ඉදිකොට ඇති ජැටි, තාප්ප, බැම් වැනි දෑ පිළිබඳව තොරතුරු ඒකරාශී කරගන්නා ලදි. මෙම තොරතුරු මේ වන විට "ගූගල් මයි මැප්" යොදවුම ආධාරයෙන් පරිගණක ගතකරමින් සිට්.

YMCA starts a Dancing Group - යලිත් ඇරඹුනු YMCA නැටුම් කණ්ඩයම

YMCA of Pamunugama has been providing children with various opportunities to showcase their talents since its inception. Dancing has been one of the areas where Pamunugama children showcased their talents at various stages and won several competitions as well. After the relaxation of Covid 19 restrictions, YMCA Pamunugama started a new dancing class for the children in the area. 

First session was held 02 November 2021 at the YMCA hall and classes are scheduled for every Tuesdays of the week. YMCA invites all interested children and youth to join the group and be a part of the YMCA of Pamunugama dancing group. Ms. Chemika Lakshani is working as the dancing instructor of the group.
