Commemoration of Nakba 1948 – The Palestinian Catastrophe held at the Mahinda Ilva Auditorium, Hector Kobbekaduwa Training Institute, Colombo today (15May 2025)
The event was graced by Prime Minister Harini Amarasooriya as Chief Guest, with the presence of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, party leaders, diplomats, embassy delegates, and many friends of Palestine. The YMCA Pamunugama was represented by the General Secretary Ridma Fonseka, continuing its long-standing commitment to advocating for peace in Palestine—both in Sri Lanka and globally.
Speakers reflected on the huge catastrophe and ongoing suffering endured by the people of Palestine, highlighting the urgent need to end violence and uphold human rights. The tragedy of Nakba was remembered not just as a historical event, but as a continuing humanitarian crisis.
Both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader expressed strong support for a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace and justice in the region.
MP Rauff Hakeem criticized the Sri Lankan government for offering only symbolic support to Palestine, calling the Foreign Ministry’s statement vague and ineffective. He urged the government to match its words with real action and condemned the sending of Sri Lankan workers to Israeli-occupied Palestinian lands, calling it a shameful contradiction to Sri Lanka’s stance.
