From July 4th to 9th, the YMCA of Pamunugama had the privilege of hosting a group of young people from the Taichung YMCA in Taiwan. The delegation, consisting of 11 youth aged 15 to 22 and their group leader Mr. Paul, took part in a series of service projects and cultural exchange activities alongside local youth and children.
The program began on July 4th with a welcome and an introduction to the Pamunugama YMCA and the surrounding community. That evening, the group began a service project at the home of Mr. Denzil Fernando and his sister—both of whom are living with disabilities—by cleaning and painting the house and its surroundings. The work continued and was completed on the morning of July 9th.
On July 5th, the visiting youth engaged with the children of the association through an introductory session, followed by a beach cleanup in the morning. The group collected over 100 bags of non-degradable waste, making a significant environmental impact. Later in the evening, they joined local youth in planting trees at the YMCA’s model garden, and concluded the day with a scenic boat ride in the Negombo lagoon, enjoying the rich biodiversity of the area.
July 6th was a cultural and recreational highlight—the introduction of the Scandinavian lawn game “Kub,” followed by a friendly tournament involving both Pamunugama and Negombo YMCA youth. Sixteen mixed teams participated, fostering teamwork and friendship. The team of Ayomi, Malindu, and Isuru from Negombo secured the runner-up position, while Rusiru, Sihansa, and another child from the Pamunugama Scout group took the championship. The day also featured fun creative and sports activities for the younger children of the association.
On July 7th, the group helped paint doors at Kapungoda St. Antony's School, improving the learning environment for students. In the evening, more recreational and interactive activities were held for the children of the association.
July 8th began with a visit to the Makalosa Dream School, where the Taiwanese youth participated in a friendly discussion. Afterwards, they enjoyed a Sri Lankan food-table that introduced them to the local cuisine. The day ended with a vegetable and fruit planting initiative at the Pamunugama Girls’ Child Care Center, promoting sustainability and healthy living.
The final day, July 9th, featured a lively talent show that brought together performances from the visiting youth, Scouts, Makalosa School children, and the preschoolers. The week concluded with a farewell party attended by members of the Pamunugama YMCA board, local youth, and the visiting delegation. The celebration included cultural performances, music, and expressions of gratitude by sharing momentos.
This enriching week of service and friendship had a great impact on all who participated. For the Pamunugama children and youth, it was a great opportunity to build friendships across borders, learn about Taiwanese culture, and work together for the community. The visiting Taichung youth, in turn, experienced the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality, participated in meaningful social action, and gained new perspectives through cross-cultural exchange. The YMCA of Pamunugama is grateful to the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka for the opportunity to host such a transformative and memorable program.
