Building Safe Families: Preventing Gender-Based Violence for Child Wellbeing — Two-Day Residential Workshop by YMCA Pamunugama

On October 17 and 18, the YMCA of Pamunugama held a two-day residential workshop for 30 parents, local youth, and staff members at Sanctuary House in Kapungoda. The workshop was organized under our project “Building Safe Families: Preventing Gender-Based Violence for Child Wellbeing.”

The project is supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Foundation for Innovative Social Development (FISD), in partnership with the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka.

Mr. Aruna Shantha Nonis served as the main resource person and led the sessions. His interactive approach helped participants feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and reflecting on difficult issues.

The sessions drew on UNFPA’s manual, Community Action for Behavior Change to Prevent Gender-Based Violence. The activities covered personal identity, self-worth, sexuality, and the power dynamics that shape everyday life. Participants also examined the social expectations, stereotypes, and unspoken norms that can cause distress within families and communities.

The program focused on empowering women and everyone affected by rigid gender roles. By discussing common myths and questioning long-held assumptions, participants were encouraged to speak out against violence and to promote healthy, respectful relationships. The hands-on exercises kept participants engaged and helped make the concepts easier to relate to.

The residential setting gave participants time to connect and speak openly. In the closing reflections, participants said the workshop had given them new perspectives, and that challenging harmful habits and treating one another with respect can help create safer homes where families can thrive.

A Day in the Wild: Children's Day Adventure at Wilpattu National Park

To celebrate Children's Day, the YMCA of Pamunugama organized an unforgettable trip to Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka's largest national park. The group of 41 included 8 children from Makalause Dream, 23 scouts from the YMCA of Pamunugama Scout group, 3 parents, and 7 staff and youth leaders.

The day began at 6.00 am as the group left Pamunugama, full of excitement. Our first stop was Anavilundawa, where we took a peaceful walk and watched the many birds that gather around the wetland. On the way north, we stopped at the salt farm in Palaviya, where the children saw how sea water is turned into the salt we use every day and watched the white salt heaps glittering in the sun.

We then took a short break at the Puttalam Lagoon Park, enjoying the fresh air and the view over the water before continuing the journey.

The highlight of the day came in the afternoon, when the group set out on a safari from 1.00 pm to 5.30 pm in five off-road safari vehicles. Wilpattu's forest tracks and natural lakes gave us a wonderful variety of wildlife. We saw a pair of foxes, a rabbit, jungle fowl, several deer, peacocks, and crocodiles resting by the water. Birdwatchers were rewarded with many species, including the Kedeththa and the snake eagle.

The most special moment was spotting a big cat(leopard) lying in the shade, which left the whole group silent and wide-eyed. Seeing such a rare animal in its natural home is something the children will remember for a long time.

After a full day of discovery, we returned to Pamunugama late in the evening, tired but happy. The trip was more than a day out. It gave our children a chance to connect with nature, learn about wildlife and conservation, and enjoy the day together as one big family. We thank the parents, staff, and youth leaders who made this special Children's Day possible.

Building Safe Families: Empowering Parents for Child Wellbeing

As part of the project "Building Safe Families: Preventing Gender-Based Violence for Child Wellbeing," the YMCA of Pamunugama held an awareness programme for parents at the YMCA Main Hall on 27 Sep 2026, bringing together 32 parents and 9 YMCA youth members.

The project is carried out by the YMCA of Pamunugama in partnership with UNFPA, FISD and NCYSL, and aims to build safer, more supportive family environments for children.

The session, facilitated by Dr. Alex Perera, focused on helping parents understand their children better and build stronger relationships with them. He guided participants through positive ways of working with children, understanding children's behaviour, managing their own emotions when responding to their kids, and being positive role models at home.

Dr. Perera also introduced the parents to simple breathing exercises to help calm the body and mind — practical techniques they could use in the middle of a stressful moment with their children.

A key message of the session was to look past the behaviour itself and ask what's driving it — what feelings, needs or experiences a child might be carrying. Patience, open communication, respect and positive parenting were all emphasized as the foundation of a safe family environment.

Parents took part enthusiastically, and many shared their thoughts at the end of the session. Several said the programme moved them and pushed them to reflect on how they treat their own children. Many spoke of wanting to make real changes at home, and felt the session gave them tools to raise their children in a more supportive way. Parents also thanked the YMCA of Pamunugama for continuing to run programmes that address issues that matter so much to families.

The programme was a reminder that change starts at home. By helping parents understand their children, manage their own reactions and lead by example, the project is helping build healthier families and a safer space for children to grow up with dignity, respect and care.

Building Safe Families starts with understanding, honest communication, and parents willing to be the example they want their children to follow.

Women Come Together to Learn, Discuss and Act Against Gender-Based Violence

On 19 September 2026, 45 women from the village gathered at the YMCA of Pamunugama Main Hall for an awareness programme on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), organized by the youth of the YMCA together with YMCA staff.

The event was part of the project Youth Action to Prevent GBV, carried out in cooperation with the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka. The session was facilitated by Mr. Aruna Shantha Nonis, a long-standing YMCA member and trainer. He guided the participants through three key topics:

  • Understanding Gender: How society shapes the roles and expectations placed on women and men.
  • Understanding Harmful Gender Norms: how deep-rooted beliefs and traditions can limit women's opportunities and contribute to discrimination and violence.
  • The Importance of Women's Empowerment: why empowered women strengthen families and communities, and the practical steps women can take to empower themselves.

The programme was not only a lecture. Group activities and open discussions gave the women space to share their experiences, ask questions and learn from one another. These conversations turned ideas into real-life understanding and encouraged participants to see themselves as agents of change.

At the end of the programme, the group agreed to work with the YMCA and to use it as a centre for their empowerment. This decision shows the trust the community has placed in the YMCA and the women's readiness to continue learning and growing together.

The event was organized by young people, which shows what youth can do when they take action on issues that affect their communities. Preventing GBV requires the involvement of everyone, and the YMCA is proud to see young people leading conversations that challenge harmful norms and build a safer, more equal society.

Youth Volunteer Leadership Training Programme – 2026

Under the youth programmes for the year 2026 the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka organized a Volunteer Leadership Training Programme as a three-stage learning journey designed to strengthen the skills and leadership capacities of young volunteers.

Volunteer 2 (V1) Training – Project Management was conducted online in June as a three-session programme, facilitated by Mr. Niranga Fernando, NGS of NCY. The training introduced participants to key concepts and practical approaches to project management.

Volunteer 2 (V2) – Fundraising followed in July as a four-session online programme facilitated by Mr. Aruna Shantha Nonis, focusing on fundraising knowledge and practical skills essential for successful youth-led initiatives.

The final stage, Volunteer 3 (V3) – Youth Volunteer Leadership, was held on 12th and 13th September 2026 for youth who successfully completed V1 and V2. Facilitated by Mr. Niranga Fernando and Dr. Alex Perera, the two-day programme included engaging discussions and activities focused on leadership, YMCA governance, and the role of young people in shaping the future of the YMCA.

A total of 11 young volunteers from the Negombo, Pamunugama, Kandy, Nugegoda, and Ampara YMCAs participated in V3.

Special recognition goes to Minanda, Raini, and Sadaru, who successfully completed all three stages of the Youth Volunteer Leadership Training Programme representing the YMCA of Pamunugama.

The programme marks another important step in empowering young people to take greater leadership and responsibility within the YMCA movement.

Empowering the Next Generation: Youth Action to Prevent GBV in Sri Lanka

YMCA of Pamunugama and the YMCA of Negombo, in partnership with the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka recently hosted a comprehensive two-session training program engaging 42 young people under the Youth Action to Prevent GBV Project. Held on August 30 and September 5, the initiative brought together a diverse group of participants representing the Sri Vimukthi Youth Group, SYU, Shramabhimani, and both local YMCAs.

The first session laid a crucial foundation by exploring basic concepts of gender, sex, and related topics through interactive study sessions, dynamic group presentations, and engaging hands-on activities designed to spark critical thinking and open dialogue among the participants.

Building upon this foundational knowledge, the second session delved directly into Gender-Based Violence (GBV), helping participants deeply understand the issue and its societal impacts using an insightful "GBV tree" model to visualize root causes, manifestations, and consequences.

To measure the tangible impact of these workshops, facilitators implemented pre- and post-evaluations, which impressively revealed that the overall knowledge level of the attendees surged from 50% to 78%.

At the conclusion of the program, all young people who successfully completed both sessions were awarded certificates of participation to recognize their dedication and commitment to creating safer communities.

Building on this momentum, organizers and participants mutually agreed to conduct further training sessions as the project continues to expand its reach and depth in the coming months. By equipping these young leaders with the right tools, knowledge, and collaborative spaces, the initiative is laying a strong groundwork for sustainable advocacy and a future free from gender-based violence.
